Search Help

Basic Search

The Basic Search gives you the option to use relevant keywords for the “with all the words” search. If you use this search you can choose to exclude words to narrow down your results.

For example, if you are looking for information on the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but not information relating to the Bill, your search could look like this:

Commonwealth Games Glasgow

with all of the words:

bill

exclude words: (can only be used with above field)

Alternatively, you can search for an exact phrase. For example if you are looking for Legislative Consent Memorandums, searching for this as an exact phrase will return more relevant results then if you were to search using “all the words”.

with all of the words:

exclude words: (can only be used with above field)

legislative consent memorandums

with the exact phrase:

The search function is not case sensitive, which means you can use capital letters or small letters, or a combination of both.

You are also able to limit your search to particular types of documents (e.g. pdf). If you know the format of the information you are searching for you can narrow the search by using the drop down arrow to choose the document type.If you are not sure of the document type it is best to leave the selection as “All Document Types”.

Advanced Search

By using the Advanced Search you can narrow your search to a particular part of the website.

For example, if you want to search for parliamentary questions regarding the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, enter Commonwealth Games Glasgow in the “with all words” field, and click on the box next to Parliamentary Questions. For research briefings on this topic, click on the box next to Research.

The Committee Filter allows you to narrow your search by Committee (both current and historic) and by committees meeting during a particular parliamentary session. If you do not select any committee or session your search will include all committees in all sessions. If you are filtering by a particular current committee please select a committee from the first drop down. If you are looking for a committee from a previous session you must select which session before you select a committee. You can then search for particular types of committee document within this.

The Results Filter allows you to limit your search to particular types of documents as described above, and also by when documents where added to the website. You can search for documents added anytime, or limit it to documents added in the last 7, 30, 60 or 90 days.

You can also choose how many results from your search are displayed on the screen – 10, 20 or 50.

If you encounter any problems with this application, please email Webmaster for further assistance.
