Presiding Officer welcomes athletes to Duathlon World Championships

Presiding Officer addressing the crowd at the World Championships opening ceremonyPresiding Officer Alex Fergusson MSP welcomed more than 1,000 athletes from over 40 countries to Edinburgh, for the ITU Duathlon World Championships.

Mr Fergusson attended the opening ceremony in the landscaped area in front of the Scottish Parliament – where the event starts and finishes.

He said: "This year’s route sets off and finishes next to the Scottish Parliament and is sure to be both exciting and challenging for participants, with tough climbs around one of Edinburgh’s most distinctive landmarks, Arthur’s Seat"

It is the first time the prestigious three-day sporting event has been held in the UK.

Mr Fergusson and Deputy Presiding Officer Trish Godman MSP will both be participating in medal ceremonies throughout the weekend.

Parliament set to return from summer Recess
MSPs offices lit up at night

The Parliament is set to return to official business this Monday 6 September, having been in recess since 5 July.

Parliament does not sit all year round. During recess MSPs can carry out their other duties.

Other Recess Dates for the Parliamentary Year 2010 - 2011 are as follows:

• 9 October - 24 October 2010 (inclusive)
• 23 December (pm) 2010 – 9 January 2011 (inclusive)

• 12 February - 20 February 2011 (inclusive)

Scottish Parliament first for Arran

Community groups and school pupils from across the island have been invited to attend the meeting alongside members of the public. Two pupils from Arran High School will present their own petitions to the committee.

The meeting will take place on Monday 13 September at Arran High School in Lamlash.

Rural Affairs Committee meeting in Langholm

This and other questions will be considered when the Rural Affairs and Environment Committee meets in Langholm for the first time next month.

Members of the public are welcome to attend and have their say at the event, which will take place at the town’s Buccleuch Centre on Tuesday 7 September, starting at 1.30pm.

Committee calls for evidence on Autism Bill

The Education, Lifelong Learning and Culture Committee is calling for evidence as part of its stage 1 scrutiny of the Autism (Scotland) Bill, introduced by Hugh O'Donnell MSP.

The deadline for submission of evidence is 8 October.
